The Teambuilder's toolkit

Here's a step by step guide to what you need to build a successful team:

The Chemistry

The right balance of personalities and approaches to work; the creative, the thinker and the doer.

Key question: Will these people hit it off

The Know-How

The team must be a mix of experience and expertise. Not built around rank, status or who your mates are.

Key question: What does each team member bring to the party?

The Direction

The objective should be crystal clear, but team members must buy in.

Key question: Are we all singing from the same song sheet

The Responsibility

The temptation is to pass the buck; everyone needs to pull their own weight; set them something specific to do.

Key question: Who owns what?

The Climate

The confidence to speak up, and the openness to constructively criticise.

Key question: Are people really prepared to say what they think?

The Trust

The ability to rely on others to get on with the job, knowing you can count on each other at the end of the day.

Key question: Can I sleep easy?

The Incentive

The pat on the back for a job well done, the reward for working well as a team.

Key question: What’s in it for them?

The Wherewithal

Management commitment and resources to do the job properly. The team is not be an optional extra, whose work will be filed in a drawer.

Key question: Are we willing to put our weight behind it to reach the results we want?

The Follow-up

The commitment to act on what the team has produced; practicing what the team preaches.

Key question: Are we prepared to act on the result?

Having considered these questions how do we fit the team together?
