The Trouble with Teams

The only thing more difficult than moving to and operating in teams is operating without them.  Any high calibre investments like teams need nurturing and development in order to reap sustained returns.

Teams are the sports cars of the workplace. High performance yes, but requiring high maintenance, attention and some expense. However the results can be extraordinary. Effective teams increase productivity, raise morale and spur innovation.

One of the barriers to team performance is conflict within the team. Conflict is almost inevitable. When two or more people get together there are bound to be differences in background, opinion and style. If conflict is not managed it will become destructive to the individuals, teams and the organization. This more often occurs when people are placed into teams without training or warning of the "forming - storming - norming - performing" cycle.

Teams also fail because the have been formed for the wrong task. Some companies still believe that the cosmetic "quality circle" type team is all they need. These tend to fail because they run parallel to work processes but are not part of them.
